The difference in a Certified Massage Therapist and a Licensed Massage Therapist, is that a Licensed Massage Therapist has gone through a background check with the state or police department of the city or state in which they work out of. They have proven through testing and transcripts that they were certified in Massage and the modalities to which they will be practicing. The background check entails a LiveScan which is an accurate electronic fingerprint test. Upon clearance, a person can then register as a massage therapist.
In layman's terms a Licensed Massage Therapist is registered and regulated, whereas a Certified Massage Therapist has not yet. In most cases a Certified Massage Therapist is not legally supposed to be working on clients/patients, unless they are working under a Doctor's License. Due to crackdowns on prostitution and unlicensed therapists, laws are changing where Certified Therapists must become licensed before administering any massage for money.
